Why repair a hernia
There is a danger if a hernia is not treated then the bowel may become trapped and cause acute pain and tissue may be damaged or die needing emergency surgery
There is a danger that the hernia may enlarge and cause increasing pain and difficulty in subsequent repair
At present, the best method of repairing a hernia is to reinforce the weakness with a ‘mesh’. This mesh can be placed either by keyhole operation or open operation. The advantage of keyhole operation is that you will be able to resume activities earlier and also suffer from less chronic pain (some patients describe an ache in the groin after the operation).
